Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279 CE)
This Qingbai bowl from the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279 CE) exemplifies the understated beauty and technical refinement that defined the ceramics of this period. Produced in the kilns of Jingdezhen, the bowl features the hallmark pale blue-green glaze that characterizes Qingbai ware—translucent, glassy, and cool to the touch.
Its form is elegant and restrained, with gently tapered walls and a smooth, rounded foot. The interior is decorated with a combed design, created by drawing a fine-toothed tool through the damp clay before glazing. These wave-like or radiating lines become subtly visible beneath the glaze, catching light in motion and showcasing the artisan’s skill in marrying decoration with form.
Southern Song aesthetics favored quiet elegance and poetic minimalism, and this bowl reflects that ideal perfectly. It was likely used for tea or wine, turning everyday use into an experience of contemplative beauty. Today, it stands as a testament to the Song Dynasty’s pursuit of harmony, subtlety, and spiritual depth through ceramics.
