Joseon dynasty (15th/16th c)

This Buncheong ware dish, dating to the 15th–16th century Joseon dynasty (Korea), is decorated using the distinctive punch’ŏng technique (buncheong sagi), which gives the pottery its name and characteristic texture.

The dish has a simple, rounded form with slightly everted rim, coated in a layer of white slip. Its surface is then stamped or “punched” with small geometric floral impressions creating a rhythmic pattern across the body. After stamping, a translucent celadon-toned glaze was applied, softening the contrast between the pale slip and the underlying clay.

Punch-decorated Buncheong wares were utilitarian yet highly expressive, widely used in both domestic and ceremonial settings. Their bold textures and spontaneous decoration embodied a sense of natural ease and rustic vitality that made them distinct from the more formal celadons of the earlier Goryeo dynasty.

Today, Buncheong punch-decorated wares are celebrated for their playful surfaces and earthy elegance, standing as quintessential expressions of Joseon-period innovation and aesthetic restraint.
