Japan
Meiji period, c. 1900
A carved and stained walking stick with a rounded knob carved in relief. Below it, bands of geometric pattern alternate with standing robed figures carved down the shaft, their faces inset in white bone. It ends in a ribbed tip.
Canes like this were made in Japan around 1900 for Western visitors and the export trade, when Japanese carving was in fashion in Europe and America. The bone faces stand out against the dark stained wood, the same trick Japanese craftsmen used on inlaid screens and boxes of the period.
