China

Late 18th / Early 19th Century

This Chinese export porcelain tea bowl, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, features a striking eagle motif at its center—a clear nod to the growing demand for patriotic imagery from the American markets during the Federal period. The eagle, depicted with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, draws inspiration from the Great Seal of the United States and symbolized strength, independence, and unity.

Hand-painted in enamel overglaze, the eagle is framed by a decorative border—with gilding, floral garland and other neoclassical elements, reflecting American tastes. Saucers like this were part of specially commissioned services, ordered by merchants, diplomats, and wealthy families eager to display their national pride through fine Chinese porcelain.
