900–1470
This Chimú effigy flask, featuring two birds, is a striking example of Pre-Columbian pottery from the Chimú civilization (circa 900–1470 AD) of northern Peru. Crafted from blackware ceramic, a hallmark of Chimú pottery, the flask was produced using a molded technique, allowing for intricate details and consistent shapes. The twin bird motifs, possibly depicting ducks, suggest the Chimú people's deep reverence for nature.
Effigy flasks like this were often ritual or ceremonial objects, possibly used to hold liquids such as chicha (a fermented maize drink) or other sacred substances. With its dark, surface and expressive sculptural details, this piece reflects the sophistication of Chimú artisans and their mastery of form and symbolism. Today, it stands as a testament to the rich cultural and artistic legacy of ancient Peru.
