Europe
Late 19th century
A hand-blown clear glass wine glass with a thin round-funnel bowl on a hollow baluster stem, cut with six long facets that run down into the foot. Underneath, the mark where the glassblower's pontil rod was snapped off has been ground and polished away.
Cutting facets into a stem made it catch the candlelight, and a polished pontil was a sign of a better glass: on cheaper ones the rough scar was simply left. Both point to a glass made by hand, before machine-made stemware took over.
