France
18th century
A globular tin-glazed faience teapot on a short foot, with a straight spout and a loop handle. It's painted in cobalt blue and iron red with hanging lambrequin swags, scrolling foliage and stylised flowers, with a band of petals around the mouth. The red earthenware body shows at the foot rim.
The hanging swags, called lambrequins, imitate the lace and embroidered borders of the period. Rouen made the style famous in the early 1700s, and faience potteries across France copied it for the rest of the century. Tea was still a luxury, and a faience pot like this was the affordable French answer to the Chinese porcelain teapots the rich were buying.
Condition: Missing its lid. Some wear to the glaze.
