Veracruz, Mexico
Classic Period (250–900)
This Veracruz ceramic figure, dating to the Classic Period (circa 250–900 CE), is a compelling example of ancient Mesoamerican artistry from the Gulf Coast region of Mexico. Formed from clay and detailed with black pigment, the figure likely held ritual or funerary significance.
The figure’s expressive features, ornamented body, and dynamic posture are characteristic of the Remojadas tradition, known for its animated and emotive sculptures. This piece was previously exhibited at the UCSB Art Gallery, and came from the estate of a faculty member at UCSB.
