This Veracruz ceramic figure, dating to the Classic Period (circa 250–900 CE), is a striking representation of the artistry and symbolic richness of ancient Veracruz culture. Crafted from fine clay, the figure features a prominent headdress, which may indicate the subject’s elite status or ritual role. Such elaborate headgear—adorned with stylized elements—was a hallmark of the Remojadas tradition, where visual storytelling and identity were conveyed through costume and ornament. This piece came from the estate of a faculty member at UCSB.
