Majiayao Culture - China
Machang Phase 2300–2000 BCE
This Machang phase jar, dating to around 2300–2000 BCE, represents a later development within the Majiayao culture of Neolithic China. Like earlier Majiayao wares, it features a beautifully hand-built form with a rounded body, narrow neck, and slightly flaring rim.
Painted in bold black pigment over a red slip, the design with lines, circles and, crosshatches—was applied using a brush. As with earlier Majiayao phases, Machang pottery was both functional and ceremonial, used for storage, burial, or offering purposes. This jar stands as a striking and tangible link to one of China’s earliest ceramic traditions.
