Utica, New York, USA
19th Century
This D. Roberts Utica stoneware jug, dating to the mid-19th century, is a classic example of American salt-glazed stoneware from Upstate New York. Made in Utica, a hub for stoneware production in the 1800s, the jug is stamped “D. Roberts”, identifying it as the work of a regional potter active during that period.
Its ovoid form, sturdy handle, and narrow spout reflect utilitarian design, while the cobalt blue floral decoration on the front adds a touch of artistry. These floral motifs were hand-brushed and applied before firing, making each piece slightly unique.
Functional and visually appealing, this jug would have been used for storing liquids like vinegar, whiskey, or molasses. Today, it’s prized by collectors for its bold decoration, maker's mark, and connection to the rich tradition of early American folk pottery.
