China - Longquan - Zhejiang Province
Yuan Dynasty 13th Century
Longquan Celadon Bowl with interior incised decoration of a Buddhist Lotus. This dish is somewhat unusual with its deeply recessed foot.
Renowned for its jade-like glaze and elegant simplicity, Longquan celadon is one of the most celebrated ceramics in Chinese history. Originating from the Longquan kilns in Zhejiang province, these stoneware pieces are distinguished by their smooth, translucent green glaze and exceptional craftsmanship that balances between form and function.
The celadon glaze, created by firing iron-rich clay in a reduction atmosphere, gives the ceramics their signature glass-like sheen. While Longquan celadon was treasured domestically, it was also frequently exported along the Silk Road and these ceramics became prized treasures across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
