China
Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279)
This Song Dynasty lotus bowl, produced in Southern China is produced from high-fired celadon stoneware. The bowl’s form, gently flared with lotus petal reliefs around the exterior, reflects the strong influence of Buddhist symbolism—the lotus being a symbol of purity rising from the murky waters of life. Covered in a rich, olive to bluish-green celadon glaze, the bowl embodies the southern Song aesthetic: quiet, balanced, and deeply rooted in nature.
Fired in reduction kilns to achieve its signature jade-like tone, this bowl would have been prized both domestically and abroad, as Longquan celadon was widely traded throughout Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and even Africa. It stands today as a hallmark of southern Chinese ceramic sophistication, where spiritual meaning, technical innovation, and timeless form came together in perfect harmony.
