A tall medieval stoneware jug with ribbed shoulders, a strap handle and the remains of a thumbed, frilled foot.
Rhenish potters fired stoneware hotter than anyone else in Europe, hot enough that the clay fused and no longer leaked. Jugs like this were the everyday beer and wine vessels of the Middle Ages and were shipped along the Rhine and across the North Sea.
Condition: Many areas of loss to the base. Side indented as made. Large crack running down one side. Small chips to the body and rim.
