England

19th Century

This Nailsea glass decanter, dating to the early 19th century, is blown in clear glass with applied opaque white loops spiraling across the body. The long neck tapers to a broad base, the surface animated by the rhythmic trails of contrasting glass worked while hot.

A classic product of the Nailsea glassworks near Bristol, the piece reflects the bold decorative style that made these wares popular in taverns and households across England. Originally fitted with a stopper (now missing), the decanter was intended for serving wine or spirits. The neck also at on point likely had a flaring lip which is also missing.

The interplay of clear glass and white looping decoration makes this a distinctive and lively survival of English country glass, prized today for its rustic charm and hand-crafted character.

Condition: Neck is shortened, likely had a stopper, now missing
