This Narino footed bowl, dating from approximately 800–1500 CE, is a distinctive example of Pre-Columbian ceramic artistry from the Narino culture of the Andean region of southern Colombia and northern Ecuador. Characterized by its elevated pedestal base, the bowl reflects both practical function and ceremonial significance.
Narino ceramics are known for their fine construction, polished surfaces, and bold geometric decoration, often rendered in red, black, and cream using negative-resist painting techniques. The footed form elevates the contents—literally and symbolically—suggesting the vessel held substances of importance, possibly coca, food, or chicha (fermented maize drink). Whether used in life or placed in burials, these bowls reflect the Nariño people's complex ceremonial practices and refined visual language.
