Colombia
c. 800–1500 AD
A tall, tapering pottery jar with a broad shoulder and a short, straight neck. The shoulder carries raised circular discs with small pointed nubs, and the lower body is finished in a burnished red slip. There's an old collection number, "18", on the base. Reportedly ex-collection David Deroche, San Francisco.
The Nariño culture lived in the high Andes on what is now the Colombia–Ecuador border, and is best known from deep shaft tombs where pots like this were left with the dead. Its potters worked with red slips and bold, simple shapes. David Deroche was a long-running San Francisco dealer in tribal and pre-Columbian art.
Condition: Glaze degradation and loss due to flaking. Chips to the rim.
