Yuan or Ming Dynaty (14th/15th c)
This pair of miniature Longquan vases, likely dating to the late Yuan to early Ming dynasty (14th–15th century), presents a rare and intriguing variation in the renowned celadon tradition. These vases exhibit a striking orange to ochre coloration, likely the result of a kiln misfire or oxidized firing—a fascinating accident in an otherwise controlled high-temperature, reduction-fired process.
Despite the glaze anomaly, the vases retain the refined, balanced form typical of Longquan ceramics—graceful shoulders, gently flared rims, and a robust yet elegant silhouette.
Misfired pieces like these were often discarded or used locally, but over time, such accidents have come to be appreciated for their uniqueness. This pair, with its warm, earthy surface and classical shape, reflects both the technical ambitions and unpredictable beauty of historic Chinese kiln traditions. Today, they stand as rare and visually compelling survivors of the Longquan legacy—where even a “flaw” becomes a feature.
