Italy

17th/18th Century

This pair of Italian bronze pricket candlesticks, dating to the 17th or 18th century, exemplifies the grandeur and devotional craftsmanship of Baroque ecclesiastical metalwork. Cast in bronze, each candlestick features a tall, tapering pricket spike designed to hold large altar candles, rising from a tripod base that ensures stability and balance.

What sets these apart is the richly detailed ornamental crown motif at the top —possibly symbolic of divine authority or a nod to their use in sacred or aristocratic settings. The surface is adorned with scrollwork and geometric baluster designs with a gilt and patinated finish that adds depth and character.

Originally intended for church altars or chapels, these candlesticks would have flanked religious icons or liturgical objects, casting dramatic light during ceremonies. Today, they remain highly collectible for their sculptural beauty, historical presence, and enduring craftsmanship—evoking the solemn elegance of Italy’s Baroque and early Rococo interiors.
