Song Dynasty
This Qingbai dish from the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE) is a graceful example of early Chinese porcelain, celebrated for its translucent, pale blue glaze and finely balanced proportions. Produced at the Jingdezhen kilns in southern China, the dish features an elegant unglazed rim, a functional detail meant to enable stacking in the kiln for more efficient and more cost effective firings.
The interior is incised with a delicate foliate design carved into the surface before glazing. These subtle lines become visible beneath the glossy glaze, catching light in quiet, rhythmic patterns. The contrast between the luminous glaze and the earthy, biscuit-fired rim heightens the visual harmony, emphasizing both material and craftsmanship.
