Europe

19th century

A slim walking cane with an ebonized shaft and a silver ball top. The top is engraved all over with scrolls and flowers, and the crown carries a large ornate monogram built around the letter S. It ends in a brass ferrule.

A slim cane with a small silver knob was the everyday accessory of a 19th-century gentleman, carried on walks and to church rather than for support. The ornate monogram made it unmistakably his.
