France

18th century

A tin-glazed faience plate with a shaped, lobed rim, painted in manganese purple with a donkey and two figures in a landscape inside a lacy border. There's a painted mark on the back.

An old typed collector's label on the back reads "SINCENY – voir Lesur 3ème partie page 992", pointing to Adrien Lesur's reference on French faience. The Sinceny factory in Picardy opened in 1733 and is known for exactly this kind of lively, sketchy painting.

Condition: Crack running through the dish from the lower left corner. Loss to the underside of the rim.
