This Coclé pedestal dish, dating from approximately 600–1000 CE, is a striking example of Pre-Columbian ceramic artistry from the Gran Coclé culture of central Panama. The dish features a broad, shallow bowl raised on a flaring pedestal base, a form commonly used in ceremonial feasting, offerings, or status display.
Its surface is adorned with bold geometric designs, painted in red and black slip using finely controlled brushwork. These motifs—triangles and intersecting lines—carry symbolic meanings related to cosmology, movement, and ritual identity. The symmetry and rhythmic repetition of these patterns reflect a deep understanding of visual balance and cultural narrative. Today, this pedestal dish stands as a vibrant testament to the artistic sophistication and ceremonial life of one of ancient Central America's most visually dynamic cultures.
