Veracruz, Mexico
Classic Period (250–900)
This Veracruz ceramic figure, dating from the Classic period (circa 250–900 CE), is a powerful example of Gulf Coast Mesoamerican sculpture, notable for its expressive features and ceremonial symbolism. The figure is large in scale and hollow-molded. Most striking is the black paint on the mouth, a detail that has ritual significance.
The figure also features large spool-shaped ear ornaments, a hallmark of elite status or deity impersonation. Such adornments emphasize the figure’s importance, possibly as a ritual performer, ancestor, or divine intermediary. Its bold facial expressions, elaborate ornamentation, and symbolic detail make it a visually compelling and culturally rich artifact from ancient Mesoamerica.
It comes mounted on a modern metal pole, which could be inserted into a base.
