18th century

A grey salt-glazed stoneware jug, incised with diamonds and looping scrolls and filled in with cobalt blue, with a pewter lid and shell thumbpiece.

Westerwald potters threw salt into the hot kiln. It vaporised and fused onto the clay as a hard glaze, and cobalt was one of the few colours that survived the heat.
